Barcelona - Skip the Line Guided Tour of La Sagrada Familia

We purchased this tour through Viator as per all our other activities. After a long day out, we headed over to the meeting point by taxi and then we met our guide, Carlos. He was a font of knowledge about this church which is still under construction, believe it or not the roof was only completed 4 years ago, before that there were only the sides!
Antoni Gaudi, the architect who died in 1926 was the mastermind behind this landmark which brings millions of visitors to Barcelona each year. The church was unfinished at the time of his death as it was financed by the people and not the State so with little funds, construction progressed very slowly. He worked on it for over 40 years and adapted his style as he went on. He left many designs and models which have allowed a new generation of architects and builders to carry on his vision and complete the church. It is estimated for completion in 2026! All ticket sales go to financing the construction which is estimated at 24 million euros each year. The actual facade is not yet constructed and the side we all see in the travel shows is not actually the front!  There are only 4 towers now but when completed there will be 12!
This one ....

The detail is so intricate, so many scenes  from the bible and legends incorporated into the sculptures.
Then we saw another side which is in a very different style of sculpture, the guide told us that when they completed this side after Gaudi's death, the people of Barcelona held protests to have it demolished as they felt it was not in keeping with Gaudi's style, this church is a combination of contradiction in styles.
Here is a picture of that side, very different sculptures, harsh lines and chiselled figures....this side depicts the stations of the cross....

The inside is awesome, the pillars, made to resemble trees in a forest are really interesting.

The church is expected to house 12,000 people for mass when it's finished. The pope has held a mass here also.

Very interesting tour, I would recommend it if you come to Barcelona.

Next post.....Cruise Day....Yippee!!
